Retirement for Engineer Glenn Garris

Congratulations to Firefighter Engineer Glenn Garris of Ladder One B shift on his retirement and service of 30 years for the C.F.D. Glenn's legacy at station 1 reaches back almost 20 years at station 1 as a firefighter on Squad 1 and as a driver.  During his last year he pledged to make an impact upon the community while leaving the department. In doing so, his fellow firefighters bet $500 he would not cut his hair for one year. Never one to run from a challenge, Glenn gladly accepted this bet and went almost 400 days without a haircut.

Since he won the bet pledge by his brothers on B shift, he decided to take the money and purchase over 100 winter  coats for the "Coats For Kids" campaign sponsored by local TV affiliate WSOC-TV. Glenn had his head and beard shaved in exchange for additional funds to purchase more coats.

The day of reckoning... the hair and beard come off video.

Glenn Garris can now do what he never could in 29 years as a Charlotte firefighter -- grow a beard and grow his hair long. But it's not just because he can -- it's because of a bet. “Another fireman said if I grew the hair for a year without cutting it he would pay me $500,” Garris said.

It's been a year and his buddy paid up. Now he has plans to use that $500 to help those in need. He’s planning to buy coats for the fourth annual collection of Steve’s Coats For Kids, which provides coats to Crisis Assistance Ministry. Those with the organization said they never seem to have enough warm winter coats for everybody who needs one. Executive Director Carol Hardison said this time of year it's especially tough. We have children who are literally at bus stops, on a day like today it's 18 degrees, and they have sometimes torn, ragged, very thin sweaters,” she said. But his effort just got a big boost.

“Since then other friends of mine have found out about it, they've been offering to kick money in because I was going to donate all the money that I raise to the Coats For Kids project,” Garris said.

At last check, the fund now totals more than $1,500.  However, Garris has another idea to raise even more money. He says, "I put it out that if somebody was willing to pay $500 I'd let them shave my head, shave my mustache and beard,”  “I mean I'll end up wearing a toboggan all winter, but the end result is helping those that need help.”

Glenn plans on having his head shaved on Saturday, January 12, 2008 in Waxhaw, NC. We'll have the results posted as soon as we get em'.

Latest update: Glenn has purchased over 1000 coats!! Great Job Glenn!

New C.F.D. Field Communications Unit Now In Service at the 1 House!

With increasing demands for interoperability throughout the United States, The Charlotte Fire Dept. recently purchased a new 2007 Chevy Suburban and a multitude of communication equipment that would impress "Buck Rogers"  and have instituted the Field Communication Unit AKA "Field Comm"

This state of the art command vehicle has the capability of responding to multiple alarm fires to serve as an on scene communications unit that allows the real-time data needed by an Incident Commander to accessed at a click of a mouse. This unit, purchase through grant funding is designed to be deployed during NCTF events where radio communications is dimished or no-existent. Each operator of the FC-1 is a member of the NCSF Communications Task Force and responds with the unit to any natural or man made disaster. Most recently, the until was deployed to Southeast Charlotte for a parking deck collapse where numerous resources were needed to facilitate a search and rescue.

A Shift's getting a workout!

What kinda workout is this?

It's Crossfit!

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police & fire academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Crossfit delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience or fitness level. The same routines can even be applied for elderly individuals with heart disease or cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. Crossfit changes load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
