A Shift Vacant House Fire House Determined as Arson

During the early morning hours of Thursday, April 22nd, firefighters from Battalion I and Battalion III battled a two-story balloon-framed residence fire that was intentionally set. On arrival, crews found the 2-story home heavily involved with fire extending throughout the walls and floors. Firefighters were hampered in their efforts to extinguish the fire on the second floor due to the interior staircase  having collapsed. Kudos go out to Engineer John Carriker for great placement of the aerial for access to the roof and 2nd floor.

C-Shift "Two-Banger" at Local Eastover Pub

February 14, 2010; Companies from across the first battalion were summoned to Big Ben's British Pub for a business fire around 6 am.

Fire investigators say an electrical malfunction sparked a massive fire which destroyed the popular restaurant in Charlotte's Eastover area.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire.  It took them about an hour and a half before the fire was completely extinguished. Due to the amount of fire damage, the structure was shored to allow for investigations and overhaul operations to be conducted.

One firefighter was injured from a fall on ice.

A fire department spokesman said Monday the cause of the fire was traced to an electrical malfunction involving some computer hardware.  The fire caused about $1 million in damage.

Water Line Rupture Interrupts Operations at Jail Central
January, 12, 2010

An 8' diameter pipe that fed a nearby cooling tower ruptured underground forcing several hundreds of gallons of water into the basement of the county's main jail facility threatening several elevators and mechanical equipment rooms. Firefighters from the 1st battalion responded by diverting the flow into drains in a tunnel connecting the jail to the courthouse.

Ladder 1  Has a Close Call

During the early morning sleeping hours last week, a member of the CFD Telecommunications division noticed smoke building up on the apparatus floor.
After alerting the firefighters, it was discovered a mechanical failure on the ladder company resulted in a small fire occurring under the cab of the apparatus. Luckily,t
he fire extinguished itself and minimal damage occurred to the apparatus.

Crews changed the truck out within an hour and were back in business with a reserve truck.

We encourage fire departments across the globe to install fire sprinklers and fire alarms in their firehouses like our department did!

We had another firehouse catch fire several years ago due to a fire apparatus fire and the sprinkler system not only saved the firehouse but prevented two apparatus from being destroyed.
